Full & Partial House Rewires
A rewire is the most disruptive electrical job there is, so it's worth doing once and doing properly - with the cable routes, socket positions and circuit design thought through before anyone lifts a floorboard.
Full or partial?
A full rewire replaces the cabling, accessories and consumer unit throughout. It's the right call where the installation is at the end of its life: rubber or fabric-insulated cable, no earth on the lighting circuits, or so many alterations layered on top of each other that nothing can be traced.
A partial rewire targets what actually needs it - a kitchen, an extension, a converted loft, or the circuits an EICR flagged - and leaves sound wiring alone. If a partial rewire will do, we'll say so.
Getting the design right first
Before we start we walk the property with you and agree where things go. This is the cheap moment to change your mind, and the questions are practical ones:
- Where the sockets actually need to be, not where they have always been
- Whether any room needs a dedicated circuit - home office, workshop, garden
- Lighting: what gets switched from where, and any dimming or two-way
- Provision for later: an EV charger, a shower, outbuilding power
- Data, TV and speaker cabling while the walls are open
Keeping the mess down
Rewiring means chasing walls and lifting floors, and we'd rather be honest about that than pretend otherwise. What we can control is how it's sequenced - working room by room or floor by floor where a property is occupied, keeping power on to the parts we're not working in, sheeting up, and clearing as we go.
Everything is tested and certified on completion, and the work is notified under Part P.
Common questions
How do I know if I need a full rewire?
Age alone doesn't decide it - condition does. An EICR is the honest way to find out, and it's a small cost against the price of a rewire. Rubber-sheathed cable, lighting circuits with no earth, or a fuse box with no RCD alongside decades of alterations usually point one way.
Can we stay in the house?
Often yes, particularly with a partial rewire or if the work can be phased room by room. It depends on the property and how much of it's coming apart at once. We'll give you a straight answer when we look at it.
Do you make good afterwards?
We'll discuss exactly where our work stops when we quote, so there's no argument later about who's filling the chases and repainting. Some customers want us to arrange it, others have a decorator lined up.
