What makes a media wall look expensive is the absence of cable. That's decided by first fix - before the plasterboard goes on - not by tidying up afterwards.
Plan it before the boards go up
Once a media wall is closed up, adding anything means opening it again. The questions worth settling early:
Power, data and heat
We put outlets behind the screen and inside the equipment recess so nothing is visible, run data rather than relying on Wi-Fi for anything that matters, and make sure the recess isn't a sealed box - amplifiers and consoles need somewhere for heat to go, and a beautiful cabinet that cooks the equipment inside it's a false economy.
If there's an electric fire in the design, it needs its own suitably rated supply and the manufacturer's clearances respected. Send us the model with your enquiry.
- Screen size and exact centre height, so the outlets end up behind it
- What equipment lives in the recess, and how it gets air
- Whether a soundbar or speakers need power and cable routes
- Data to the wall for anything you'd rather not stream over Wi-Fi
- Whether an electric fire is in the design, and its clearances
- Concealed lighting, dimming, and where the driver can be reached
Lighting the wall
Concealed LED strip behind or above the recess softens the contrast between a bright screen and a dark wall, which genuinely makes long viewing more comfortable. It wants to be dimmable, on its own switching, and a warm colour temperature - and the driver needs to be somewhere reachable, because it will be the first thing to fail in ten years' time.
Common questions
Can you do this on a solid wall rather than a stud build?
Yes, though concealing cable in masonry means chasing and making good rather than dropping it inside a void. It's very doable - just a different job, and worth pricing before the design is fixed.
Do you build the wall as well?
We do the electrical side - power, data, lighting and the first-fix cabling. We're used to working alongside a carpenter or builder doing the construction, and the earlier we're all talking, the better it comes out.
When should I get you involved?
At design stage, before anything is built. The cheapest time to add an outlet is when the wall is still a drawing.
