EV Charger Installation
A car charger is a heavy load running for hours at a time, which is why it needs its own circuit and its own protection rather than being spurred off whatever is nearest.
What the installation involves
A home charge point runs on a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, sized for a continuous load, with overcurrent protection and the specific earth-fault and DC-leakage protection required for EV charging under BS 7671. Where the incoming supply arrangement needs it, that includes protection against the loss of the earth - one of the details that separates a compliant installation from a risky one.
Before quoting we check what your supply can actually take: the main fuse rating, the earthing arrangement, and whether the existing board has capacity. If load management is needed so the charger backs off when the house is busy, we'll tell you.
Choosing where it goes
Position matters more than people expect. Worth thinking about:
- Which side your car's charge port is on, and how you park
- Cable reach without running it across a path where people walk
- How far the unit is from the consumer unit - it affects the cable run and the cost
- Whether you want it inside a garage or on an outside wall
- Room for a second car later, if that's on the cards
Smart charging
New home charge points sold in Great Britain have had to have smart functionality since the Electric Vehicle (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021 came into force, which is what lets you schedule charging for cheap overnight rates. If you're on an EV tariff, that scheduling is where the running-cost saving actually comes from.

Common questions
Can my house take a charger without an upgrade?
Most can. It depends on your main fuse rating and what else draws heavily - electric showers and hobs especially. We check this as part of quoting, and where capacity is tight, load management usually solves it without touching the supply.
Do you install chargers I have bought myself?
Yes. Tell us the make and model when you enquire so we can check the installation requirements and quote for the right work.
Can the charger go in a detached garage?
Usually yes, but it depends on whether there's already a suitable supply out there and what condition it's in. Sometimes the garage supply needs upgrading first, which we'd price separately so you can see what's what.
