Outdoor & Garden Power, Garages and Outbuildings

Power outside the house is a different job from power inside it: buried cable at the right depth in the right protection, weatherproof accessories, and protection that suits equipment being used outdoors.

What we get asked for

Typical outdoor work looks like this:

  • Sockets in the garden, on a patio or in a porch
  • Supplies to a garage, shed, workshop or home office
  • Power for a hot tub, pond pump or irrigation
  • Electric gates, and power for a car charger
  • Replacing an old outbuilding supply that has failed an inspection

Doing it so it lasts

The failures we get called out to fix outdoors are nearly always the same handful of things: cable buried too shallow or with no mechanical protection, indoor-rated accessories used outside, joints made in something that's not actually waterproof, and no thought given to how water tracks along a cable into an enclosure.

We use armoured cable where it belongs, take supplies to outbuildings properly with their own means of isolation, and pick accessories with an ingress rating that suits where they're actually going - including the fact that a socket under a bench gets hit by a pressure washer eventually.

Hot tubs and heavier loads

A hot tub is a sustained load in a wet location, so it needs its own suitably protected circuit rather than an extension lead through a window. Check the manufacturer's electrical requirements before you buy, and tell us the model when you enquire so we can price the right circuit first time.

Common questions

Can I just run an armoured cable myself and get you to connect it?

We'd want to see the cable route and depth before connecting anything, because once it's buried we can't inspect it. If it has already gone in we'll be straight with you about whether we can certify it.

Does outdoor work need certifying?

New circuits are notifiable under Part P and you should get certification for them. Anything supplying an outbuilding is worth having documented properly, not least for when you sell.

My garden lights and socket stopped working after heavy rain.

That's a classic water-ingress fault and it very rarely fixes itself as things dry out. See our fault finding page - it needs testing to find where water is getting in, rather than just resetting the breaker.
